Maine Licensure Information and Requirements
For the latest up-to-date information on licensure requirements and fees, visit the Maine Board of Nursing website or contact the Maine Board of Nursing licensing division at (207) 287-1133.
Licensure Requirements
Maine is a member of the nurse licensure compact (NLC). Any RN or LPN that has this multi-state license can work in their home state, as well as any compact state.
As long as you maintain legal residency in a compact state, you’ll never have to worry about state-specific renewal requirements and fees, as long as you continue to work in other compact states.
If your nursing license is from a non-NLC state, don’t stress. You can apply for a license by endorsement.
These are the requirements for applying for licensure by endorsement in Maine:
- Provide a current photo.
- Have a valid United States social security number.
- Complete the electronic application.
- Provide proof of residency.
- Complete a criminal background check.
- Pay the non-refundable application fee of $75.00.
- Provide verification of licensure through Nursys® or directly from the Board of Nursing in the state that does not participate in Nursys®.
- Pass the NCLEX-RN.
- Have a valid United States social security card.
Transcripts may be required on a case-by-case basis.
Licensure Fees
The fees for licensure by endorsement in Maine include:
- Application fee: $75
- Verification of licensure fee: $30
- Background check: $52.50
