Licensure Information and Requirements for Travel Nurse Jobs in Baltimore
Since Baltimore is in the state of Maryland, it follows those travel nurse job requirements. For the latest up-to-date information on licensure requirements and fees, visit the Maryland Board of Nursing website or contact the Maryland Board of Nursing licensing division at (410)585-1900.
Maryland was the first state to join the NLC, the nation’s Nurse Licensure Compact. This means that if you’re a travel nurse with a valid nursing license from another state in the NLC, you don’t have to get a separate Maryland nursing license to legally work in this state.
Licensure Requirements
Nurses who don’t hold a license from a fellow NLC state must apply for licensure by endorsement in Maryland. You can do this by taking these steps with the Maryland Board of Nursing:
- Get fingerprinted.
- Provide verification of your nursing license through your original state of licensure or Nursys®.
- Complete an online RN/LPN endorsement application.
- Complete an approved implicit bias training course.
The Maryland Board of Nursing will issue temporary nursing licenses to qualified applicants. For information about eligibility, click here.
If you’ve held a Maryland RN or LPN license in the past and it’s currently inactive, non-renewed, or invalid, you have to request a renewal packet from MBON.nurselicenserenewal@maryland.gov.
If you’ve never held a Maryland nursing license but have an active license in another state, just continue with the licensure by endorsement process.
Licensure Fees
Maryland’s licensure by endorsement fees include:
- Application fee of $100
- A temporary license fee of $40
- A background check fee of $31.25

Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland — with a population of close to 600,000 people and nearly 3 million in the entire Metro area — and has a rich history dating back nearly 300 years. Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, draws many visitors each year. This is where Francis Scott Key wrote what would become our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, during The War of 1812’s Battle of Baltimore.
Speaking of the harbor, Ft. McHenry is just one of many things to see and do there. With tons of great restaurants and shops plus stunning views of the water, you can easily spend a whole day walking around and still not see everything.
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is also home to:
- The National Aquarium, where you can study 20,000 animals in habitats ranging from an Australian river gorge to a tropical rainforest
- The Maryland Science Center, featuring three levels of exhibits to explore
- Port Discovery Children’s Museum, with loads of hands-on experiences and interactive exhibits for kids of all ages
- Historic Ships of Baltimore, one of the world’s most impressive collections of military vessels
If you’re more interested in exploring Inner Harbor via the water, you can take a short cruise, travel by water taxi, or even captain a Chessie Dragon paddle boat.

If you’re looking for a fancy night out, Charleston Restaurant offers world-class dining in Harbor East.
Craving Italian? Baltimore has its own Little Italy district. Check out La Tavola or Dalesio’s while you’re there.
Baltimore is steeped in African-American culture. While you’re there, be sure to visit:
- Reginald F. Lewis Museum, the authentic voice of Maryland African-American history and culture
- Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park, a Living Classroom Foundations campus and national heritage site
- The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, the only museum of its kind

- American Visionary Art Museum, named “one of the most fantastic museums anywhere in America” by CNN
Do you love trains and railroad history? The B&O Railroad Museum is housed in a restored and remodeled roundhouse and has the most comprehensive collection of railroad artifacts in the Western Hemisphere.
And not that you won’t have plenty to do in Baltimore, but if you’d like to venture out, you’re just a relatively short drive from:
- Washington, D.C.
- Annapolis, home to the United States Naval Academy
- Philadelphia, another great historic city
- The beaches of Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey
