Alabama Licensure Information and Requirements
For the latest up-to-date information on licensure requirements and fees, visit the Alabama Board of Nursing website or contact the Alabama Board of Nursing licensing division at 1-800-656-5318.
Licensure Requirements
If you currently hold a multistate license in another Compact state, we have great news — you do not need to obtain an Alabama RN or LPN license to work as a travel nurse in the state. However, you will still need to apply for approval to engage in advanced practice nursing even if you are an APRN with a multistate license in another Compact state.
If you don’t have a multistate license, you’ll need to apply for licensure by endorsement.
Here are the following requirements you’ll need to meet for an Alabama nursing license:
- You must be a legal citizen or US resident.
- You must have a valid Social Security Number.
- You must have graduated from a nursing program with the same educational criteria as Alabama nursing programs.
- You must submit an official transcript for your nursing program in a sealed envelope to the Alabama Board of Nursing (faxed copies are not permitted.)
- You must provide documentation showing you have earned 24 contract hours of CE (continuing education) within the last 24 months.
- You must submit a Request for Verification of Nursing License for Endorsement into Alabama form. The Alabama Board of Nursing does not permit licensure verification through Nursys®.
- You must submit your fingerprints prior to completing your license application.
It typically takes 3-4 weeks for licensure by endorsement application to be verified. As long as you meet the application requirements for licensure, you can apply for a temporary license to practice nursing in Alabama while waiting for your license to be verified.
Licensure Fees
Application fees for licensure by endorsement include:
- $100 application fee
- Temporary permit fee $50
- Transaction fees: $3
Nurse Licensure Compact Status
Alabama became a party to the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) on January 1st, 2020.
