Kentucky Licensure Information and Requirements
For the most up-to-date information on licensure and fees in Kentucky, visit the Kentucky Board of Nursing or contact them at (502) 429-3300.
Licensure Requirements
Kentucky has entered the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), and if you currently hold a multistate license in another Compact state, we have great news — you do not need to obtain a Kentucky RN or LPN license to work as a travel nurse in the state.
If you don’t have a license in a compact state, and you want to practice in Kentucky, or if you are moving from a compact state and want to make Kentucky your primary state of residence, you will need to apply for licensure by endorsement.
Here are the following requirements you’ll need to meet for a Kentucky nursing license by endorsement:
- Complete the online application and pay the applicable fee
- Complete the Jurisprudence Exam and score 80% or higher
- Request the verification of licensure be submitted to the Kentucky Board of Nursing (through NursysⓇ or using a verification of licensure form)
- Submit transcript if licensed in:
- California
- Connecticut
- Hawaii
- Washington
- Report criminal conviction
- Verify nursing license from the state you passed the NCLEX
Nurses may be issued a temporary permit while the Kentucky Board of Nursing is waiting for licensing board verification. Temporary permits are valid for six months, and supervision is not required when practicing with a temporary permit.
Licensure Fees
To apply for an endorsement license, there will be a fee of $165.
Nurse Licensure Compact Status
Kentucky is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement.
