Licensure Requirements
Nebraska is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact, which means that if you received a license from another compact state, you will not need a Nebraska license to sign on for a Nebraska travel nurse job.
RNs and LPNs who do not have a license from a compact state must apply for licensure by endorsement in Nebraska by doing the following:
- Complete the application for Licensure by Endorsement.
- Include the required documents:
- Evidence of citizenship or lawful presence
- Application fees (unless you qualify for a waiver)
- Documentation of fee waiver eligibility (if applicable)
- Conviction records (if applicable Discipline records (if applicable)
- Criminal background check
- License verification(s).
- English proficiency exam results (if applicable)
- Include the required documents:
- Complete all areas of the fingerprint card(s) and be fingerprinted by an authorized professional. Nebraska State Patrol has six locations in Nebraska.
- An official nursing transcript received by mail directly from your school of nursing or the institution maintaining the record. Transcripts in sealed envelopes received from the graduate WILL be accepted. Electronic transcripts are also acceptable.
- Verification of Original License. Use this form if your original state board of licensure is not participating in Nursys®. Please contact your original state of licensure to verify the fee required for license verification.
APRNs applying for licensure by endorsement must provide the following:
- Application for licensure
- Any associated fees
- Proof of citizenship
- Proof of age
- Background check
- An official nursing transcript received by mail directly from your school of nursing or the institution maintaining the record. Transcripts in sealed envelopes received from the graduate WILL be accepted. Electronic transcripts are also acceptable.

- Proof of an active RN license
- Verification of Original License. Use this form if your original state board of licensure is not participating in Nursys®. Please contact your original state of licensure to verify the fee required for license verification.
Travel nurses waiting for endorsement who have an active nursing license in another state may apply for a temporary license. This license is valid for 60 days or until the expiration date of your current state’s license.
Licensure Fees
Licensure by endorsement fees varies based on a nurse’s degree. RNs and LPNs must pay $123.00 for an initial license or to renew their license.
APRN must pay an additional $68.00 to receive or renew their license in Nebraska.
Include background check fee of $45.25 and your fingerprinting fee of $123.00 (personal checks accepted) payable to DHHS – Nebraska Board of Nursing – Advanced Practice nurses should include an additional $68.00 – with your application.
Nurse Licensure Compact Status
Nebraska participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Working as a travel nurse in an NLC state allows nurses not to have to apply for licensure within the state and takes away the worry of having to deal with licensure renewals and fees.

To renew a license as an LPN or RN, nurses are required to meet one of the following continued competency requirements or waivers:
- Practiced at least 500 hours of nursing in the past five years and have completed a minimum of 20 contact hours of continued education from an approved provider within two years. These contact hours can be completed in person or via internet courses or home study.
- Graduated from a nursing program in more than two years but less than five years and completed at least 20 contact hours of continued education from an approved provider within two years. These contact hours can be completed in person or via internet courses or home study.
OR
- Have graduated from a nursing program within the last two years.
- Completed an approved refresher course within the last five years.
- Obtained/maintained current certification in a nursing specialty granted by a nationally recognized certifying organization.
OR
- Developed and maintained a portfolio that includes the licensee’s current continuing competency goals and evidence/verification of professional activities to meet those goals.
