Texas Licensure Information and Requirements
For the most up-to-date information on licensure requirements and fees, visit the Texas Board of Nursing website or contact them at (512) 305-7400.
Licensure Requirements
Since Texas has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact, you won’t need to get a state-specific nursing license to work there if you already have a multistate license in another compact state.
If your primary license is in a non-compact state, you are required to apply for licensure by endorsement. To complete this process, you must have:
- Graduated from an approved licensed LPN, LVN, or RN program
- Taken the appropriate exam; and
- Either worked in nursing or taken the US NCLEX® exam no more than four years before the application
Texas will accept verification of your qualifications through Nursys®.
You are ineligible to apply for licensure by endorsement if:
- You have ever held a Texas nursing license
- You didn’t graduate from an approved nursing program; or
- You haven’t taken a national nursing licensing examination
While you are waiting for your application to be processed, the Texas Board of Nursing will give you a one-time, 120-day temporary license within 15 business days of receipt of the application and fee.
Licensure Fees
The application fee for licensure by endorsement in Texas is $150.
Nurse Licensure Compact Status
Texas has been a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) since January 19, 2018.
Is Texas a Walk-Through State?
Texas is not a walk-through state.
Texas CEU Requirements
Texas nurses are required to complete 20 contact hours of continuing education every two years.
